Choose by the exact reticle and mounting package you need, not a claimed optical-performance winner: Optics Intel has not yet range-tested either scope side by side.

The Burris RT-6 and Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 occupy the same basic job: an AR-friendly, low-power variable optic with a true 1x low end and a 6x high end. That makes a generic “which is better?” answer tempting—and not honest.

This is a specification-and-setup comparison, not a range test. This page compares Burris RT-6 SKU 200472 with the current Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 AR-BDC3. That distinction matters. Burris’s current specification table calls the RT-6 reticle Ballistic 5X, although older Burris material also uses the Ballistic AR name. Vortex has sold earlier Strike Eagle 1-6x24 variants with the older AR-BDC reticle; their dimensions, weight, and included items are not necessarily the same as the current AR-BDC3 model.

The Practical Choice Is Mostly Reticle and Setup

Both are second-focal-plane scopes. Their drop references are therefore intended to be used at the specified high magnification, not treated as calibrated holds at every power setting. If you plan to use the BDC instead of only the center aiming point, read the exact reticle manual, zero with your actual ammunition, and confirm impact at distance.

On paper, the RT-6 is the smaller published package by 0.37 inch and 1.1 ounces. Its 80-MOA elevation and windage range is still substantial for a capped, set-and-forget AR LPVO, but it is less than the 140 MOA Vortex lists. The RT-6’s adjustable throw lever is integrated into the scope; factor that into how you position a mount and handle the magnification ring.

The current Strike Eagle AR-BDC3 publishes a wider field-of-view range, more total adjustment, and an included thread-in throw lever. Its AR-BDC3 reticle uses a 1-MOA center dot, a broken 16.625-MOA circle, and calibrated references Vortex describes for common 5.56 loads. That does not prove it will match your rifle or ammunition; it tells you which reticle system you are buying.

Do Not Let a Reticle Label Replace a Zero

Neither “5.56 BDC” label is a promise of a universal trajectory. Barrel length, load, muzzle velocity, altitude, temperature, zero distance, and the actual reticle version all matter. A safe first setup is:

  1. Confirm the exact scope and reticle from the box or manufacturer page.
  2. Install the scope in a 30 mm mount that fits your rifle and gives safe eye relief; neither product’s scope-only specification establishes your rifle’s final mount height.
  3. Follow the maker’s manual for installation and battery setup.
  4. Zero using your ammunition, then verify any BDC marks on paper at the magnification the reticle requires.

What Published Specifications Cannot Settle

The table is enough to make a fit-for-purpose choice. It is not enough to support a performance verdict. Before calling either scope better, we need the same evidence on both products: measured low-light resolution, practical eyebox forgiveness across magnification, tracking and return-to-zero results, illumination visibility against bright targets, and repeatable zero retention after mounting and firing.

Until that range work exists, choose the RT-6 if its lighter published package, integrated lever, and Ballistic 5X layout better match your intended setup; choose the current Strike Eagle if its AR-BDC3 layout, included thread-in lever, or published adjustment range addresses your stated need. Neither is an evidence-backed “winner” yet.
